Commemoration of Saint Joseph Church

St. Joseph Church will be celebrating 150 years of establishment. The parish was established in Ulumalu, Haiku on June 29, 1862 by Portuguese immigrants from the Azores and Madeira who migrated to Maui.

A wooden church was built in the present cemetery site. With growth the third and existing church was erected in 1911 by Fr. Justin Schayk, SSCC with the tower added in 1927.

St. Joseph Church parish will commemorate with a year of spiritual retreats and activities starting with the annual Feast on April 29, 30 & May 1, 2011. On June 26, 2011 we will be celebrating the centennial of the existing church with Mass and a Luau to follow.

2011 Calendars of watercolor paintings from Maui County Church’s by artist Rosemary Hogarty was created to help fundraise for the year long activities.

The calendars are on sale at the parish office for $5.00 or by mail by adding $2.50 for postage per calendar.
